podiatrist in springfieldMany of us have been there: you’re shopping for shoes, you find that perfect pair, but it’s a size too small. You figure it’s not such a big deal, or they’ll stretch out to the right size. However, this is wrong – buying shoes in the wrong size can cause serious damage to your feet! It’s important to buy a shoe that is comfortable and fits well while you’re shopping. Our podiatrist in Springfield explains more below.

Why Shoe Size Is Important

Ill-fitting shoes are the root of many foot problems. High heels, flip flops, and shoes that are too narrow or wide can cause problems such as:

  • Calluses
  • Bunions
  • Heel pain
  • Hammertoes
  • Claw toe

While ill-fitting shoes cause foot problems based on size, flip flops and high heels cause problems by design. Flip flops force your toes to grab on to the strap, leading to muscular problems and heel pain. High heels force your toes into a narrow toe box, putting pressure on your toe joints, a risk factor for hammertoes. If you enjoy wearing high heels, try to stick to shorter heights to avoid foot pain and other problems.

Too Big or Too Small?

While too small of a shoe can cause painful calluses or bunions, too large of a shoe can be an issue as well. Your toes and arch may become overworked, trying to hold on to the bottom of the shoe as you walk. This can also cause hammertoes and claw toes, which may require surgery if they are left untreated.

The Best Time To Try Shoes On

To get the most accurate fit for your shoes, shop at the end of the day when your feet are largest. If the shoe fits when your feet are swollen, they’ll fit all the time!
